Diving: what to tell the patient with asthma

Until a decade ago, divers with asthma were uniformly barred from diving with compressed air. This prohibition was based more on theoretical concerns for barotrauma than on actual data. Follow-up studies, although retrospective, do not support a ban on recreational or commercial diving for divers with stable asthma. These studies have noted that, despite the prohibition on diving, many divers with asthma have logged multiple dives without negative consequences.

Getting started in scuba diving

Scuba diving involves getting underwater by having artificial breathing apparatus that is called scuba. The best thing about scuba diving is it doesn't ask for lots of skills and all of the people can fancy trying it. However, you will always require a better swimming skill to move through the water. Anyways, you will be having fins that will be attached to your feet to make it convenient for you to swim around. Scuba diving can reveal an amazing life underwater that can really be fascinating for all of the people. The only thing that will require a little attention from you is the better use of breathing apparatus. You can learn that from different sources to become able to make an optimal use of it. The rest will hardly cause a problem.

Snorkeling Vacations

by Max Bellamy

Hawaii, Mexico and the Caribbean are popular locations for snorkeling vacations, along with Australia and Bali. Bali is known for its temples and volcanoes. Rich in culture and mythology, a world of sensory delights is opened to travelers of all ages. The island boasts of mountain streams and beaches lined with palm trees where Technicolor fish, including the kingfisher are in abundance. There are also tropical retreats famous for their spas, cuisine and pools. The Ayung River in Bali is located amidst a rain forest and surrounded by teak trees.

The Great Barrier Reef in Australia is one of the most accessible reefs offering snorkeling opportunities with many guided tours available. Many of the day trips take place at the inter-reef islands like Michaelmas Cay, Green Island and Fitzroy Islands.

Some tours offer a chance to simply walk onto a beach and into the water instead of jumping from a boat. Resting buoys are placed a distance from each other, giving the tourists a chance to come up and rest during their tour. Float coats, designed to give extra buoyancy are also available. Many of the sites in the Reef are very shallow with warm water.

The requisites for these snorkeling vacations are medical certificate, proof of identity, sunscreen, hat and protective t-shirts, preferably Lycra, to be used while snorkeling. Water should be kept handy to ward off dehydration while playing under the hot tropical sun.

Snorkeling At Night

Why go snorkeling at night? It has much sense, because there is a number of sea creatures that just don't show in the daytime. Anyway, while snorkeling at day time requires no special training at all, the night time snorkeling requires at least some instruction. The site of snorkeling is important, and you should choose it beforhand. You need to be familiar with the site, and it is recommended that you have snorkeled there at least once. An underwater flashlight is needed, so get one from a scuba shop before going on your trip. The type of flash that uses 8 D-cells produces a nice bright light, while the type that uses 2 D- or C-cells is much easier to carry. Carrying a chemical light to make you more visible to boats and ships is highly recommended either. The chemical light is a single use light that functions during several hours since activation. Have it activated before you get in the water and attach it to your wrist. Safe and enjoyable snorkeling at night to everybody!

Vacation on Hawaii, Oahu

Recently I was on snorkeling vacation in Oahu, Hawaii, and I would like to share some thoughts regarding renting place to stay, a car to get around, and activities other than snorkeling available at the resort. In fact, there are many options when it comes to Oahu vacation rentals, but the thing I would advise you to put special attention on is the location of apartment. If you've already gotten a clear idea about what you wish to do and what to see there, the task will be much easier. If you wish to experience as much beachfront activities as possible (like snorkeling, scuba diving, boating and the like), then beachfront rental is the must. If your goal is somewhat different and you would rather spend bigger portion of your vacation time for sightseeing or hiking, I would recommend then rentals located further inland, which will both save you a lump sum of money for the activities to enjoy and reduce travel time. Also it does have sense to research the possibilities of car rentals taking into account the car insurance they suggest for that car. Of course, you can do without any car, but having one at your disposal will be an extra benefit for a vacationer of being able to leave and come as you please and generally move at your own pace.

Background check on stuff who train or service you

If you consider booking either scuba diving package or snorkeling tour through a resort or facility operator, you should ask yourself some questions and get answers whether they really care for your safety both beneath and above the water, especially if you are a novice fan of these water sports. Are they capable of providing training for their clients that would be adequate to ensure the whole vacation and recreation will by but comfort and enjoyment?

All companies proclaim they are providing excellent quality tours matching what they advertize. Particularly this has to do with the instruction and certification of the recreational divers they cater to. Do they have good record with authorities or institutions that inspect their facilities in their turn, if any?

To be able to confirm that the resort's safety record might be estimated as satisfactory, you have to see what they say about personnel they hire, and especially what captains they employ. I would say you may rely only if you see big enough boats navigated by the captains that are certified and licensed by the US Coast Guard.

Dive boats that transport more than 6-7 passengers should also be routinely inspected and re-certified by the Coast Guard.

Finally ask a question whether all their stuff working with people are required to submit to at least some sort of pre-employment background check and any sort of of drug screening while in course of performing their work responsibilities on workplace. You may be surprised, but on one site offering divemaster internships I read once the following notice: "Slackers, whiners, drug addicts, need not apply!" Which means that incidents of the sort do happen in the industry. At other forum I read about a dive master (won't tell the name of the resort) who was "a retarded ex-drug addict with his body covered all in cartoon tattoos", and who did not pay any attention to safety at all.

Snorkeling dangers

Snorkeling might be dangerous. Snorkel in crystal clear water between two continents with DIVE.IS. Snorkeling in Iceland - what d'you know about it?
